    Tom Neeley's 36-year career on the Morton School Board came to an end Tuesday. First elected in 1989, Neeley didn't run for re-election April 1. His final board meeting was Tuesday. Neeley and Tim Braker, who was on the board for six years and also didn't run for re-election, were praised by board members and Superintendent Craig Smock. Because Neeley and Braker each served as the board president, each received a crystal gavel as a gift from the Morton School District.

    History was made Monday in Washington during the city's bicentennial year. Lilija Stevens, the first female mayor in the city's 200-year history, was sworn in by Tazewell County Clerk John Ackerman, a former Washington City Council alderperson. The swearing in was quickly followed by a standing ovation from the crowd that filled the council meeting room that brought tears to Stevens' eyes. "It was humbling," she said to media members after running her first City Council meeting as mayor.

    Paula Johnson lost to Todd Sluder in the race for Ward 1 alderperson on the Washington City Council in the April 1 election. But with the election of Lilija Stevens as mayor, Stevens' alderperson seat in Ward 1 opened, and created an opportunity for Johnson. Johnson filled Stevens' alderperson seat Monday when she was appointed to the council to fill the remaining two years of Stevens' term. Stevens recommended Johnson's appointment, which was approved unanimously by the council.

    Tazewell County is getting a much-needed new animal control building. The county board on Wednesday approved a design-build proposal by Peoria-based PJ Hoerr, which beat out three other prospective vendors. Like the current animal control facility, the new building will be at the county's Tremont campus, located off Illinois Route 9. The building will be constructed starting this summer along the ring road near the EMA building on the campus and should be completed by January.
