The Jasper County Sheriff’s Department says a Buna man went to jail late Friday afternoon after threatening a property owner with a shotgun. It happened at about 4:00 on Highway 96 South in Buna. According to the report, 59-year-old Jamie Lee Brooks was armed with a shotgun when he was trespassing on property. The report said when the property owner confronted him, Brooks pointed the shotgun at him and then walked away.

The Jasper Lions Club will hold their 7th Annual Benefit Clay Shoot on Saturday, April 26th starting at 10:00am. The event will be at the Jasper Country Club & RV Resort on County Road 257. Entry forms are available on the Jasper Lions Club Facebook page, or you can enter the day of the event beginning at 8:00am. The event will feature door prizes, food, and a shotgun raffle. In addition to the clay shoot, organizers say there will also be a BB gun shoot-off.

A Church in Newton was destroyed by fire on Saturday afternoon. It happened at the First Assembly of God Church on Kaufman Street. Newton Fire Department Captain Melanie Smith says the building was a total loss. Meanwhile, the cause of the fire is under investigation.

A man and woman went to jail in Nacogdoches after the sheriff’s department said they found a large amount of drugs and a stolen gun. Deputies say it started with a traffic stop with 38-year-old Luther Levann Jackson driving and 32-year-old Tynequa Shanice Blakey was the passenger. Jackson was arrested for a warrant and Blakey was released.

A man went to jail on Thursday evening after Jasper County deputies say he threatened to shoot and kill a 15-year-old neighbor. It happened shortly before 7:00 on County Road 351, about 5 miles south of Jasper. The report said multiple witnesses told the deputy that Jesse Howard, age 35, threatened to shoot and kill the teenager with a shotgun. According to the report, the deputy determined that Howard was under the influence of methamphetamine.

Beaumont Police are working to identify a man who they say over the last two months has been using fake identification and cashing forged checks at numerous banks. According to investigators, the man parks his vehicle out of view of security cameras and he walks normally to the door, but once inside the bank he starts doing a “feeble old man act”. Investigators say they believe he will continue to commit these criminal acts until he is caught.

A traffic stop in Beaumont on Wednesday morning resulted in the arrest of a Florida woman after Beaumont Police say she was hauling a large amount of cocaine. According to the report, an officer stopped a van pulling a U-Haul trailer on Interstate 10, which was driven by 43-year-old Kedra Parker. The report said the officer found the cocaine in packages in the trailer. Parker was taken to the Jefferson County Jail and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance.

The Jasper City Council will convene in a special called meeting on Monday and go into executive session to consult with City Attorney Billy Morian III regarding a report written by San Antonio attorney Frank J. Garza about the Jasper Economic Development Corporation. Garza was recently hired by council to advise them on matters pertaining to JEDCO. The hiring of Garza came after months of the JEDCO board not meeting due to alleged discrepancies in the seating and appointments of the board members.

A Golden Triangle man went to jail Wednesday night after Jasper Police say a traffic stop turned up a large amount of drugs and two guns. A report filed by Officer Jordan Courtney said he stopped a pickup truck at about 9:30 on Highway 96 at Houston Street. The report said the driver, 40-year-old Mitchell Prince, of Port Arthur, immediately got out of the vehicle and slammed the door, and he told the officer that he had a quarter-pound of marijuana in the vehicle.

If you see a large column of smoke to the north, the U.S. Forest Service says they are conducting a controlled burn of nearly 12,000 acres of land in the Upland Island Wilderness Area of the Angelina National Forest. The burn is about 12 miles east of Zavalla. It began Thursday and will continue through Friday. The Forest service says the purpose of the controlled burn is to remove excess vegetation and dead wood which will decrease the spread of a wildfire in the future.
