Everyone likes a good piece of pantomime this time of year, but the opinion piece by Andrew Moretta recently published in Civil Service World painting Prospect and our colleagues at the FDA as “ugly sisters” and telling us what we think really didn’t fill me with a feeling of solidarity. To put it another way, it did rather feel that that the author was doing all he could to engineer the fear that “he’s behind you”.

On June 26 I breathed a huge sigh of relief as I crossed into Fountain Hills and left behind the visual assault on Shea. Then I read Nancy Plencner’s letter in that day’s paper. Ms. Plencner stated, “I recently drove through Scottsdale, Paradise Valley and Phoenix. Along every major thoroughfare were hundreds of candidate signs staked out for the July 30 primary election. This is how we elect our leaders with open, free political expression.” Voters, not signs, elect candidates.

At the recent mayoral forum, Councilmember Friedel stated the revenue from the town’s share of the state Vehicle License Tax (VLT) is now all dedicated to streets — and that should have been done a long time ago. During the Feb. 27 town council retreat, the town’s chief financial officer stated 100% of the VLT has been dedicated to streets in the past but was changed to a 70/30 allocation in 2020. Was Councilmember Friedel not paying attention at the retreat?
