The Northern Ireland Football League Championship could increase in size from 12 teams to 16 for the 2026/27 season as part of a radical restructure of the game here which will see the end of the Premier Intermediate League and THREE new leagues introduced in a FIVE tier pyramid system. The plans relate to the Irish FA’s strategy to ‘transform the football pyramid to create a clear pathway for ambitious clubs’ with NIFL on board to ‘explore all potential models for the good of the game’.

Gerard Lawlor has accused Northern Ireland Secretary of State Hilary Benn of playing ‘hide and seek’ in relation to holding a meeting about funding for football clubs here. The Northern Ireland Football League (NIFL) Chief Executive claims that Benn agreed to have discussions on the matter back in August 2024 but 10 months on Lawlor says he is still waiting for a get together between the two parties.

As we sit and chat in his daughter Jane’s house in Randalstown, I marvel at his recall as he talks about legends of that era like Harry Gregg, Danny Blanchflower, Bertie Peacock, Billy Bingham and Peter McParland.
