Valleycliffe Christmas carollers set a new record on Dec. 8. The group collected about 66 kilograms (145 pounds) of human food and an additional 54 kg (120 pounds) of dog food for the food bank. For 16 years, Kay Austen has been freely giving her time to lend a hand wherever she’s needed at the Squamish Public Library. Most recently, she has been part of the institution’s Visiting Library Program, which delivers books and other materials to people who are housebound. It’s a job that requires a personal touch. “I like this delivery work, and the reason why is because you get to know the patron so well,” said Austen. “You get to know them as a friend.

Among the challenges listed by Squamish Helping Hands is the need for a long-term destination for people exiting transitional housing. While presenting to District municipal council on Jan. 23, the executive director of Helping Hands, Lori Pyne, recounted a story of a resident at Under One Roof. Pyne said the resident, an ex-logger who has spent his whole life in Squamish, voiced some of his concerns.

Mason Cox, the society’s director of counselling, said consulting with the not-for-profit society is free, and people shouldn't hesitate to reach out if they feel they’re in need of assistance.
