    FERRUM - Wilbert Henry (Hank) Norton Jr, who came to western Franklin County in 1960 to guide a five-year old Ferrum College football program to national acclaim, has died. Christened with the nickname "Big Daddy'' by his first full-time assistant coach the late Rick Tolley, Norton, 91, passed away Wednesday at the home of his youngest son, Jack, in Ferrum. He had been in declining health for the past several weeks. A memorial service has been scheduled for Saturday, Feb.

    FERRUM - Abe Naff, Ferrum College's baseball coach from 1985-2007 and its athletic director from 2004 to 2019, will not be returning to the position at the western Franklin County college, The Franklin News-Post has learned. Naff was given personal leave by the college late last month.

    DALEVILLE - Lord Botetourt defeated Franklin County by 13 points, 69-56, Tuesday in a Blue Ridge District boys varsity basketball contest, the 2023-24 regular-season finale for both clubs. Lord Botetourt's win is its second this season over the Eagles (6-16). Franklin County suffered its sixth straight loss and is 1-8 in its last nine games. Blue Ridge District postseason play begins today.

    Franklin County track and field standout Tristan Wright has been invited to compete in the 116th Milrose Games in New York this weekend. 0n Sunday morning (Feb. 11) he will be competing in the 60-meter dash. Wright has achieved the second fastest 55-meter time in the nation, FCHS track and field coach Chris Renick said. Wright competed in the Walter Bass High School Invitational at Liberty University in Lynchburg where his preliminary time was 6.37 seconds and his finals time was 6.29 seconds.

    Tryouts to select the Franklin County varsity and junior varsity sideline cheer squads and mascots and the Benjamin Franklin Middle School (BFMS) sideline cheer team for the 2024-2025 school year are scheduled for March 25-27 at the high school.
