AbstractTreated-wastewater (TWW) irrigation and manure amendment are critical for sustainable agriculture in water- and nutrient-stressed regions. Yet, these practices can potentially disseminate pathogens and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) determinants to crops, which can be transmitted through the food chain to humans.

I. INTRODUCTION The microbiota of an individual's gastrointestinal tract, comprising microbes, their genes, and their functional traits, is fundamental to host digestion (McWhorter, Caviedes-Vidal & Karasov, 2009), detoxification (Kohl et al., 2016), development (Parfrey, Moreau & Russell, 2018), immune function (Broom & Kogut, 2018), protection from pathogenic bacteria (Roggenbuck et al., 2014; Mendoza et al., 2017), and cognitive performance (Davidson, Raulo & Knowles, 2020a).

AbstractAntimicrobial resistance (AMR) — the ability of microorganisms to adapt and survive under diverse chemical selection pressures — is influenced by complex interactions between humans, companion and food-producing animals, wildlife, insects and the environment. To understand and manage the threat posed to health (human, animal, plant and environmental) and security (food and water security and biosecurity), a multifaceted ‘One Health’ approach to AMR surveillance is required.
