On one unusually cold March night, 10 years ago, emergency calls reported a young Black man acting erratically, jumping in and out of traffic on the near east side. Matt Kenny, the Madison police officer dispatched to the scene, entered a home on Williamson Street looking for the young man. Moments later, Kenny fired seven shots from his handgun, all of the bullets striking 19-year-old Tony Robinson. Robinson was later pronounced dead at UW Hospital.

The spark that ignited Emmitt James’ musical career was lit, like so many others, during his teenage years. “I started off doing spoken-word poetry,” he says, recalling his days at Reagan High School. “That naturally transitioned to rapping. And when my music teacher saw me and my friends were really into it, they built us a little makeshift studio. And so we learned how to record.” That was more than a dozen years ago – back when he was just a scrappy kid from the North Side.

Mixing musical genres isn’t easy, but the Wisconsin-based band Bizhiki makes their fusion of traditional Ojibwe powwow singing, indie rock instrumentals and electronic dance flavor seem effortless. “Some of these sounds are sometimes reserved or tucked back into certain circles or places,” says singer and drummer Dylan Bizhikiins Jennings.

Before rap artists topped the charts and could sell out arenas, they were playing shows in any space that would take them — backyard barbecues, cramped basements, rec center cafeterias.
