Of all the things we have to blame the COVID-19 lockdowns of 2020-21 for, perhaps the most unexpected is that some desperate people used them as a handy opportunity to begin having sex with trees. In 2020, a 45-year-old Canadian “somatic sex educator” named Sonja Semjonova was going out on her daily walk permitted to her by the Trudeau Taliban, when she came across (perhaps even literally) a giant oak tree by the side of a path in British Colombia.

Every year in this country, a story emerges that some stupid organisation or other has just ‘banned Easter’. The general clockwork media template goes like this:Institution X is reported to have ‘banned’ Easter by removing all reference to the word and its associated Christian meanings from its products, buildings or services.

The recent petition from educators pleading with the Government not to show the Netflix drama Adolescence in UK schools under the bizarre pretence that it is a ‘documentary’ was one I would have happily signed during my own previous life as a teacher. My time in the classroom was 15-20 years ago now, but I felt even at the time that the English Literature curriculum I taught was chiefly valued by its creators as a convenient means for ensuring the political re-wiring of captive pupils.
