This election, social media has been a major battleground as candidates try to reach younger voters. As Gen Z and Millennials now make up the dominant voter bloc in Australia, securing their support is more electorally important than ever. This effort has also played out on Chinese social media platforms, namely WeChat and RedNote. Thousands of Australians use these apps, often as a main source of news. The RECapture research team has been tracking political activity on these platforms for years.

Chad Booc was just 27 when he was killed. A volunteer teacher with the Philippines' Indigenous Lumad people, Mr Booc was a vocal activist on and offline, speaking up for Indigenous land rights and against harmful mining projects. "He was really young, he was really funny," said Mitzi Jonelle Tan, a youth climate activist, recalling Mr Booc as a mentor and friend.

Joe Yang is a 35-year-old doctor in one of China's public hospitals. He earns about 15,000 RMB ($3,200) a month and that figure would be even lower if it didn't include commissions he receives from drugs salespeople for selling their medications to his patients. Over the course of a year, commissions average out at around 5,000 RMB ($1,083) a month, roughly a third of his total income.
