Maria Larkins’s book, Grounds, Romberg and Boyd: Melbourne’s Midcentury Modernists, is both about the famed Australian architectural firm and architectural practice of the 1950s and 60s more broadly. The bright yellow cover, with a floor plan of the Academy of Science building blazed across it, sets up the graphic theme for the book – and perhaps makes a pairing with the orange cover of Christine Phillips and Peter Raisbeck’s Robin Boyd: Late Works from 2020.

The photograph captures late sunlight shining through the high windows on the street-facing façade and reflecting off the famous draping ceiling. Taken a few years ago by Peter Bennetts, the image captures how we continue to look back in new ways at this extraordinary body of work.
