After dropping the first two matches to the Spokane Chiefs, the Portland Winterhawks are in a monumental battle for their playoff lives. After dropping 10-4 and then fighting back and ultimately losing in overtime, the Hawks had three straight home games to correct the series. Game three was a tough one. There were 13 combined goals scored in the contest; sadly, eight of them went to Spokane.

Cliffhangers are always good if there is an excellent payoff at the end. Such was the case with the Portland Winterhawks and Everett Silvertips. The Western Conference regular season top club and Scotty Munro champions had a tough time when they faced Seattle for the right to move into round 2. It seemed like a done deal after Everett scored two in a row over the Portland Winterhawks to start round 2. However, Portland rebounded and led the series 3-2 at one point, before giving up game six at home.

Well, it’ll be a cliffhanger as we break right as things are at the crux. OSN is out this next week as the final slots in round three are about to be determined. Everett’s 2-0 start evaporated, and the Portland Winterhawks tied the series at 2. The return to Portland wasn’t the hope it would be as the Hawks dropped an 8-4 omelet at the hands of the Silvertips and forced a game seven back in Everett.

With building conflicts and more, the schedule gets weird in the second and future rounds, especially when teams are playing in venues allotted to other teams. The Prince Albert Raiders/ Medicine Hat series had to start a day late due to the wonky schedule from the previous series. Out west, thing started well enough for Everett in taking the two games at home, however, things changed for them in coming to Portland.

As anticipated and as mentioned in the last column, the Portland Winterhawks are good, but not that good. The case could be made if only one lucky bounce or maybe a tad more experience, and we might be looking at an even series or the Hawks up by two. In each game, it took overtime to decide; in both cases, the Tips found their way to the scoresheet first.  In the first game, Tyson Jugnauth made a screened five-hole shot to put the Hawks up by one, which stayed through the period.
