Norman Sanson, proud son of Troon in Ayrshire, was a truly outstanding referee in the 1970s. The cap presentation – following on from similar ceremonies involving Allan Hosie, Hollie Davidson, Mike Adamson, Ken McCartney, Eddie Murray, Iain Ramage, Chuck Muir, Malcolm Changleng, Rob Dickson, Brian Anderson and Jim Fleming – took place at Sanson’s former club, London Scottish last weekend. And the London Scottish first XV did Sanson proud too, posting a 60-33 Championship win against Cambridge.

MacLachlan, a scrum-half, won four caps in 1954. He died in Canada in March, four days after his 97th birthday. Watherston, an openside flanker, won three caps in 1963, following in the footsteps of his father, Jack, also a back-row forward, who was capped twice in 1934.

Dall was an immensely gifted flanker and a proven and charismatic leader. He was part of a great Heriot’s and Edinburgh rugby family. His dad, Fraser, was the stand-off in Heriot’s championship winning team in 1978-79, having won a Scotland B cap against France in 1973, while his younger brother Andrew was capped against Wales in Cardiff in 2003 and was also a Scotland age-grade cap and mainstay of the Edinburgh professional team.

The British & Irish Lions squad for their 2025 tour to Australia has been announced, with some eight Scots selected by head coach Andy Farrell as part of a 38-strong group. The three-Test tour, which includes a further seven matches, is the 10th time that the Lions have travelled to face the Wallabies, from an inaugural series in 1899 up to the last time the sides faced off, in 2013.
