Green River takes place in early summer in Greenfield; FreshGrass comes around every fall at Mass MoCA in North Adams. And this week, if you cross the New York State line and head into the Hudson Valley, you can spend four days at one that, by intention, tries to be a bit different from the rest: Oldtone Music Festival.

A screen of Japanese Zelkova trees separate a bustling modern metropolis and the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum, once an avant-garde masterpiece of French artistry and Japanese craftsmanship, and now an Art Deco time capsule. The building was, until the 1940s, the residence of the Asaka family, a branch of the Japanese Imperial House. Its history is filled with sea crossings, the decorative arts and tragedy – a story almost worthy of willow pattern.

NEWPORT — Saturday was in many ways a typical day at this year’s Newport Folk Festival. There was music to suit almost any taste, from the epic indie rock of The War on Drugs to the sui generis psychedelic cumbia of Reyna Tropical to the stark, minimalist folk of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, who made a return visit to Fort Adams State Park for the first time in years. But there was also something less typical Saturday: a concentrated offering of various stripes of country music.

Mighty Poplar is a bluegrass supergroup that grew out of a distinctively bluegrass tradition: pickin’. The band brings together banjo player Noam Pikelny and guitar and mandolin player Chris Eldridge from Punch Brothers; mandolin player, guitarist, and primary vocalist Andrew Marlin from Watchhouse; bass man Greg Garrison from Leftover Salmon; and fiddle player Alex Hargreaves from Billy Strings’ band.

With around 90 performances across five stages at the Newport Folk Festival this weekend, attendees have to make choices about what they see, whether they roam or stake out territory in front of one of those stages. But stay or wander, they’ll definitely get a sampling that will not lack for variety. If you’re a folkie, there’s always plenty of that on offer, notwithstanding the genre-expansiveness that has become a hallmark of Newport.
