Arizona's first territorial capital became a commercial transportation hub soon after its founding in 1864. On December 31, 1886, the first Prescott and Arizona Central Railway locomotive pulling freight and passenger cars arrived in Prescott from Seligman, where it connected to the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad, a subsidiary of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.

I was raised in the suburbs of one of the nation’s most Western cities, Los Angeles, but I spent my summers learning to ride on a cattle ranch outside of Prescott, Arizona. Later, I began driving cross-country for college and since then have driven over 20,000 miles across our great country, leaving the interstates behind whenever I can.

In 2013, I received a call from my friend Allen Barra who said there was an opportunity at True West: Western Books editor. I thanked him and called Executive Editor Bob Boze Bell. The rest is history and ever since I have had the pleasure of managing the Western Books department for True West magazine. Pre-COVID, I was receiving well over 600 books a year for review.

How do you get hooked on history at a young age—or at any age, for that matter? I’d say one of the best ways is to get out of the library and classroom and walk where history happened. For me it started in Jerome and Clarkdale, Arizona. My earliest memories of historic places are of the fabled mining town and its ghostly, nearly all empty buildings (we’re talking 1968 here!) and the ruins of the ancient Puebloan people of Tuzigoot, a national monument near the Verde River, below Jerome.
