I’m old enough to remember when political observers, television talking heads and political journalists spent virtually every hour of every day talking about Democrats’ lack of a message and the party’s poor standing even among their own partisans.

Donald Trump is off to the fastest start in American presidential history, shutting down government departments and agencies, laying off government workers, and threatening universities and law firms. There’s no reason to believe that the president and his top political henchmen, Vice President JD Vance and billionaire Elon Musk, will alter their style or agenda. Sure, Musk may look for ways to adopt a lower profile in the short term amid growing questions about his judgment and appeal.

It has been one month since Donald Trump’s second term began, but it feels like he has been president for at least the past decade or two. Every day brings with it chaos, disorder and turmoil, which is exactly what the 45th and 47th president of the United States wants. He relishes being in the media continuously, both because his ego demands attention but also because his “flood the zone” approach to governing requires him to keep his adversaries on the defensive.

I would love to see Canada be the 51st state. The Canadian citizens, if that happened, would get a very big tax cut — tremendous tax cut because they are very highly taxed — and you wouldn’t have to worry about military, you wouldn’t have to worry about many of the things. Reagan won 489 electoral votes and carried the popular vote over President Jimmy Carter by almost 10 percentage points.

@StuPolitics, I read it when it came out last Fall, and loved it. Tweeted about it. Loved Julia Warhola—what an amazing woman, no Andy without her. And the history of her people and life in Austria-Hungary. It’s a terrific book. How on earth did you get Ms. Rusinko to marry you?
