On June 28, 2024, the U.S. Supreme Court overruled the “Chevron doctrine” in its decision on Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, No. 22-451, and Relentless v. Department of Commerce, No. 22-1219. The court reversed 40 years of precedent set by Chevron v. Natural Resources Defense Council that deferred to federal agencies in interpreting ambiguous laws when developing policies and regulations.

With the passage of another continuing resolution, we have avoided a government shutdown. That is nothing to celebrate. Funding the government with short-term continuing resolutions over five months into the fiscal year is dysfunctional.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of former Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, the former chair of the U.S. House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. I had the privilege of meeting her a handful of times, and I was astounded by the breadth of her achievements in Congress. Congresswoman Johnson was a legislator’s legislator, a grand tradition of our republic. She drove important legislative advancements which spanned well beyond science.
