Garrett OKs changes to council districts

GARRETT — The Garrett Common Council Tuesday adopted an ordinance to redefine the city’s four election districts. The current ordinance was adopted Jan. 15, 2013 and has not been repealed since that date. Following three separate votes, council members Brian Best, Bobby Diederich and Toby Jordan unanimously introduced, passed and suspended the rules to adopt the ordinance in time for the June 30 deadline, as required by state law.
School district recognizes longevity, honors retirees

GARRETT — Five retiring employees were recognized during Garrett-Keyser-Butler School District’s annual pride day held May 27 in the middle school cafeteria. Each honoree was presented with a personalized gift and a lifetime pass to Railroader sporting events. They include instructors Doug Klopfenstein, Jim Petre and Stephanie Rhoades and bus drivers Gary Crabill and Dennis Sutton. They represent more than 100 years of service to the district.

Garrett contracts for planning services

GARRETT — The City of Garrett has signed a proposal with BCS Management to fill the duties of a city planner following the resignation of Vivian Likes earlier this year, the Board of Works confirmed at its June 3 meeting. Lana Beregszazi, CEO of BCS Management, reported Mike Myers will be on staff least two days a week in the planning department at City Hall to sign permits and answer other inquiries. Beregszazi will attend Garrett Redevelopment Commission and other city meetings as needed.

GARRETT — School and community organizations presented scholarships to Garrett High School seniors during an awards program Thursday in the Paul Bateman Gymnasium. Adam Burns ranks as the valedictorian of the senior class with the highest grade-point average. Camdyn Woods is the salutatorian with the second-highest average. The top 10 seniors were revealed during the program. Each one was presented with a MacBook Air laptop for their accomplishments.
GKB school year ends with many events, activities

GARRETT — The final week of the school year brings several activities for students and staff at Garrett-Keyser-Butler Schools. Building administrators shared plans during the May 19 school board meeting. Garrett High School Principal Matt Smith reported eighth-graders visited the high school last week and participated in a scavenger hunt and other activities. Senior breakfast, graduation practice, the annual elementary walk and senior awards all take place Thursday.
