HELSINKI — Use of a novel algorithm significantly improved prehospital triage for stroke, more accurately directing appropriate patients to centers equipped for endovascular therapy (EVT) and boosting the likelihood of good functional outcomes, based on computer modeling across the continental United States. “In the MAP-STROKE study, we showed that a novel Bayesian predictive triage algorithm could improve stroke-related neurologic recovery.

HELSINKI, Finland — Using telemedicine-based neurologist assessments in mobile stroke units proves to be safer and more resource-efficient than using traditional models in which a neurologist is on board the ambulance, new research shows. The trial, conducted across 10 tertiary hospitals in Melbourne, Australia, is the first prospective, head-to-head comparison of these two models of stroke care delivery.

HELSINKI, Finland — An artificial intelligence (AI)–based clinical decision support system helped doctors make decisions in the treatment of acute ischemic stroke and was associated with a significant reduction in recurrent vascular events in a new, randomized trial. The AI system integrated clinician input with data from the hospital records and imaging of more than 20,000 patients in China to help guide patient management around stroke etiology and secondary prevention.

HELSINKI — In patients with large vessel occlusion stroke treated within 4.5 hours of symptom onset, outcomes were better in those who received the thrombolytic tenecteplase prior to endovascular therapy than in those who underwent endovascular treatment alone. Results from the BRIDGE-TNK trial showed that patients who received tenecteplase had a significantly higher likelihood of achieving functional independence at day 90.

New data from subgroup analyses of trials evaluating endovascular treatment in patients with stroke due to occlusions of distal or medium arteries has given some hope that there may be a population who could benefit from such an approach.
