Picture by Mardi BorgThe Settlement Point ferry is ready to be recommissioned after a lengthy period of maintenance and repairs. According to Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, it will be returned to its base on Monday, December 18. While the ferry has been out of action, the Hastings River crossing at Settlement Point has been serviced by the smaller 15-car Hibbard Ferry.

Specialist contractors have been working to stabilise dozens of landslips - 10 of them major - over a period of two years.

A Kempsey man has won his second Lucky Lotteries Super Jackpot in just five years. The first time he won $100,000 was in September 2018. He went on to use some of his winnings for a trip to Alaska. Now, he's won another $100,000 in Lucky Lotteries Super Jackpot draw 10815, which was drawn on Friday, December 8. In addition to the guaranteed first prize, he also scored two consolation prizes of $1000, bolstering his total win to $102,000.

Sue Stephenson, Editor: Some time ago, I wrote a piece about how tough it is being a regional student studying and living in Sydney. It was based on my daughter's experience and how she was working multiple jobs while trying to complete a double degree at UNSW. Even with her parents' help, she found herself suddenly facing a myriad of daily expenses. And being 21, she wasn't yet eligible for Youth Allowance because - heaven forbid - both her parents work. Now I have a sequel to that story.

Port Macquarie's annual Christmas Fair will be held at the Town Square on Friday, December 8, with a new tree, a free ice skating rink, a laser light show and a visit from Santa among the major drawcards. There will be local artisan stalls. food trucks and roaming performers. The family-friendly fair will run from 5pm-9pm. Last year's controversial Christmas Tree is being replaced by a sustainable version standing 9.5m tall, with a walkthrough base. It will be lit at 8:15pm.
