Brits are keen to ditch cars and planes for trains – but only if journeys are faster and more direct. A new global survey by Hitachi Rail reveals 36% of UK passengers expect to travel more by train over the next five years. But two clear things would push that number even higher: faster journeys (34%) and direct routes (35%). Overcrowding, meanwhile, remains the biggest gripe. Hitachi, one of the UK’s major train manufacturers, says it has answers.

A House of Lords committee has criticised government plans to extend financial support for large-scale biomass generators, warning the main beneficiary – Drax power station – could be handed a poor value-for-money deal at consumers’ expense. In its latest report, the cross-party Secondary Legislation Scrutiny Committee raised red flags over draft legislation, that would bring existing biomass plants into the Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme from 2027 to 2031.

A major power failure sparked travel chaos across London on Monday afternoon, grinding parts of the Tube to a halt and leaving thousands of commuters stranded. The disruption began around 14:30 when a fault on the National Grid’s transmission system caused a sharp voltage dip. That sudden drop triggered a fire at an electrical substation in Maida Vale, where three metres of high-voltage cabling were destroyed. This quickly caused widespread outages that paralysed several Tube and Overground lines.

Games have the potential to drive real-world climate action, according to new findings from the Play2Act initiative. The in-game poll, embedded in 24 popular titles including Subway Surfers, Pokemon GO! and Avakin Life, surveyed 181,000 players from 189 countries — with promising results. Launched in September 2024 by not-for-profit platform PlanetPlay in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Play2Act aimed to assess the impact of environmental messaging in games.

Ofgem has secured more than £150 million in funding for vulnerable energy consumers through its enforcement actions against rule-breaking energy companies, with the latest round of £9.6 million grants bringing the total distributed under the Energy Redress Scheme to £152 million. Since the scheme’s launch in 2018, 647 projects across the UK have received grants funded by payments from energy companies that breached regulatory standards.
