One person is in custody after a shooting in North Port on Thursday night. According to the North Port Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 8000 block of Rocliff Avenue around 9:30 p.m. about a shooting victim. A suspect who is familiar to the victim is in custody. NPPD has not said if there were any injuries. The police department states they will release more information when appropriate.

Cape Coral firefighters helped rescue an alligator from a storm drain Saturday morning. According to the Cape Coral Fire Department, someone spotted the 10-foot-6 gator stuck along 2857 NW 27th St.Crews helped a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission trapper remove the gator. They used the brush truck's winch to lift the lid off the drain and then helped load the gator onto the truck. Photos show the animal's head peeking out from the storm drain embedded in the grass.

The Lee County School District emailed parents Tuesday after President Trump's executive order overturned a directive requiring special protection against ICE agents in schools. Under an executive order signed by President Donald Trump, Immigration and Customs Enforcement Officers can now enforce its policies in what were once "protected" areas. This means ICE agents can once again arrest people in schools, churches, hospitals, and shelters.

A Charlotte County man pleaded guilty after attempting to shoot his ex-girlfriend in Fort Myers Shores and barricading himself inside his home in October 2023. According to the Lee County Sheriff's Office, Daniel Dunn, 35, broke into the victim's home on the 3000 block of Third Street in Fort Myers Shores with a rifle. Dunn shot her in the neck and then barricaded himself in his home on Mandy Street in Punta Gorda for hours.

A school resource officer saved the life of a 3-year-old boy on Thursday, Jan. 14. According to the Lee County Sheriff's Office, Deputy Kvaley was patrolling the Lee County School District’s main office when a woman told him her son was not breathing. LCSO said Kvaley took the toddler, who was unresponsive and seizing, out of his stroller and began giving him aid.

Two men were intercepted after trying to sell items out of their trunk while parked in a handicapped parking spot in Punta Gorda on Monday. According to the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office, a detective in an unmarked vehicle watched suspicious activity in the Publix parking lot at 2310 Tamiami Trail while picking up his lunch. A North Port man was arrested and charged with homicide after being accused of making his wife's death look like a suicide. According to the North Port Police Department, around 3 a.m., officers responded to a call in the 2700 block of Halladay Street regarding a dead individual. The call was initially reported as a self-inflicted death; however, after an investigation, it was determined the victim was killed. The police department stated elements of the scene had been staged by the suspect.

People from across the community gathered at the 53-acre site at the intersection of Colonial and Challenger boulevards.According to a press release, Lee Health unveiled images and video footage showcasing what the future campus will look like. The first phase of construction is slated for completion in 2028.
