Estimated reading time: 3 minutesOn a 53-2 vote, the California state Assembly May 19 passed a resolution condemning a proposed $715 billion federal cut to the Medicaid budget. A 2nd resolution decried President Donald Trump’s executive order banning birthright citizenship. A lawsuit challenging the order is currently being heard by the Supreme Court. The resolution, AJR 5, authored by Assemblyman Alex Lee, a Democrat, passed the Assembly on a 58-1 vote. Both resolutions are largely symbolic.

Amid the tension of the US-China relationship, and post the Covid-19 pandemic, Asian Americans are once again facing the ‘yellow peril’ myth. The 5th annual Social Tracking of Asian Americans in the US Index — STAATUS — was released by The Asian American Foundation earlier this month. The survey polled 4,909 people over the age of 16 from across the US from Jan. 22 to Feb. 25.

After a full night of raucous debate, the House early May 22 morning passed a budget bill which would strip an estimated $715 billion from Medicaid, and $300 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Several organizations immediately voiced their concerns over the measure, noting that at least 13 million would lose health care coverage, and millions of low-income people, including children and seniors, would face food insecurity.
