    German Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited India from 24-26 October, 2024. This visit is part of the 7th Intergovernmental Consultations (IGC). This was Scholz’s third visit to India since he became chancellor in 2021. In 2023 he visited India twice – bilateral visit in February and G20 leaders’ summit in September. India and Germany are celebrating 50 years of science and technology cooperation and 25 years of strategic partnership in 2025.

    The nature of political violence in India has both temporal and spatial dynamics : first not limited to only during elections but can happen anytime which has the innate capacity to be manipulated for political interests. Second, the overlapping nature of the violence with crimes which establishes that the motive is not limited to winning or influencing elections alone (which is a long term objective).

    Violent clashes between students and police in Bangladesh have officially claimed more than 300 lives (unofficial figures are much higher). The students are protesting against a controversial quota system that reserves 56% of governmental jobs, leaving only 44% for general merit-based selection. Although the initial mobilisation of the students was about quota reform, the continuation of the protests indicates deep-rooted anger against the Sheikh Hasina government.

    Dear India,It was in 2016 that I had left you to pursue my higher studies in a faraway country in Europe. For a middle-class family this was a dream, and I was simply living it. You had made it happen. Your welfare schemes and subsidized public education made it possible. Sociology has taught me to understand the reasons behind an event. The learnings of politics had taught me to contextualise events. My college in Kolkata, Presidency, has taught me to oppose what is wrong and demand what is right.
