Dwaipayan Bhattacharya, a commentator on Indian politics, captures the difficulties of thinking about social change in India by characterising Indian politics and society to be “a messy terrain of myriad contradictions.” It is messy because the social totality that encompasses Indian politics is mired with multiple contradictions.
