The ideal Indian plate is dal, vegetable curry, chapati or rice, curd, chutney, and a dessert. At least, that is what we are told or shown. Then, there’s the classic debate of north Indian roti versus south Indian rice. However, in regions such as Marathwada, the majority of the working class of Mahars and Mangs eat dry rotis of jowar/bajra with meat, vegetables, and pulses with onion, garlic and crushed peanut.

Kerala’s story is now part of folklore. Amidst the Brahminical influence gripping north India, the southern state comes across as a liberal enclave of beef eaters. As one of the earliest post-colonial communist states in India and the colonies, the Kerala story is prefixed with the influence of communism. Like any well-crafted piece of propaganda, there is another side to things but we are unsure of where to find a credible version of the complete picture.

As Covid restrictions hit, bizarrely, my department at Harvard had an idea about the impending massive lockdown well in advance. The institute asked me to refrain from two international trips to academic conferences that had been planned for March and April 2020. Tickets had already been booked by the hosts. After realising that I was unwilling to cancel, the institute director sought a meeting. In a serious tone, he advised me to call off all trips. A week later, the US announced the lockdown.

Suraj Yengde recalls his childhood horror of mealtimes while growing up in a budget-conscious Dalit household, and how he now looks favourably on a diet that once appalledWhen I went to the UK to study law, I was ill-prepared for the autonomy it demanded of me. I had never cooked before. Even though my father had encouraged me to assist my mother in the kitchen, she didn’t allow this. She was territorial. My mother hushed us if we were in the kitchen, the other part of our two-room house.

Like many post-colonial nation states, Kenya saw strife between pre-colonial cleavages and the new Constitutional state. Both do not fully adhere to traditional ways of power exchange and contest the hegemony of power-broking social groups. The story of Kenya’s independence, especially the Mau Mau episode, is not a widely accepted phenomenon among a section of its people, who consider it a land issue that had no effect on regions outside the Central and Rift Valley areas.

Sitting in the US, in my apartment, I saw the live debate between US presidential candidates Joe Biden and Donald J Trump. Biden’s performance was unimpressive. I was expecting the debate to be more animated since it included Trump. I remember his past presidential debate with Hillary Clinton in 2016. I was in Chicago, visiting a Telugu Dalit family of business folks. The hosts, who favoured the woman candidate, saw Clinton being ripped to shreds by Trump’s scathing attacks.

India, July 20 -- BR Ambedkar collaborated with the British, and demanded a delay of the independence process. He supported the Muslim League, criticised the Congress and the leadership of Gandhi, Nehru and Patel. He mooted the idea of a separate settlement for untouchables within the country. He went to Winston Churchill with his demands and tried to broker an alliance with him. He threatened to cause a revolt when India was in the middle of transitioning to independence.
