1 INTRODUCTION Limited precipitation (<350 mm per year) in the dryland region of inland Pacific Northwest (iPNW) led to widespread adoption of 2-year winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)—fallow rotation (WF) (Machado et al., 2006). In the WF system, wheat is produced every alternate year and land is left fallow for 13 months between wheat crops, mainly for soil water recharge (Schillinger & Papendick, 2008; Schillinger & Young, 2004).
