YADKINVILLE — Elkin High School hosted a last-chance meet on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at the YMCA in Yadkinville, inviting Forbush, East Surry, Wilkes Central and Starmount high schools to give all swimmers one last chance at making cuts for the upcoming NCSHAA Regional swim meet.

The Elkin High School Swim Team grabbed two wins as they traveled for their first two meets of the season. The Buckin’ Elks traveled to Wilkes YMCA on November 18 to face off with five other teams, including West Wilkes High School, Wilkes Central, Surry Central, Alexander Central and Starmount High School. Both the women and men’s teams topped the pack, taking the win. Elkin set the pace early, jumping out to sweep both the women's and men’s 200-yard medley relay, the opening event of the meet.

The Lady Elks basketball team of Elkin High School opened up non-conference home play while hosting the Patriots of Union Grove Christian School from Lexington and the Warriors of West Iredell High School. In both games, the Lady Elks jumped ahead early and controlled the tempo for the entirety of both games, taking two easy early season wins.

The EHS Men’s Soccer Team have easily defeated their foes in the first two rounds of 1A NCHSAA state championship tournament play. The Buckin’ Elks hosted the Dragons of NCSSM of Morganton on Friday evening in Grissom Stadium. The Elks quickly took control and never looked back as they cruised to a 7-0 victory.

To the Editor:Aimee Berger-Girvalo has continued to put environmental issues, particularly climate change, at the top of her agenda, and she supports passing an Environmental Rights Amendment to codify all citizens’ right to clean air, water, soil, and healthy ecosystems. The amendment would require that environmental protection would be equitably ensured for all communities and be a priority in decision-making, regulating, and permitting.

CONCORD — Landon Norman, a rising 6th grade student at Elkin Elementary School, recently participated in and won the MLB Pitch, Hit and Run competition held at the D-bat Baseball Complex in Concord on May 28. Major League Baseball’s Pitch, Hit and Run competition is a free event that provides boys and girls ages 7 to 14 an opportunity to showcase their baseball and softball skills, while earning a chance to attend and perform during the MLB World Series. kAm}@C>2? Elkin Wet Lightning Swim Team, a summer rec program that competes within the Blue Ridge Swim League, hosted the Dobson Dolphins at Elkin City Pools for the first meet of the season last Thursday. Then the team traveled to the Reeves Community Center to compete with the Reeves Rapids of Mount Airy on Saturday morning. EWL came away with their first two wins of the summer season. On Thursday evening, the two largest teams in the BRSL faced off in the opening swim match of the season.
