Caregivers and their loved ones are gathering Monday evenings at Holy Name Church for the Care for Caregiver Workshops with dinner at 5:30 p.m., and workshops at 6:30 p.m. through Nov. 25. Although caregivers are not required to share their stories, as we get to know each other, we learn about their challenges. Their stories have prompted me to reflect on my own experiences as a caregiver for my mother and my husband and support I received from my spouse, siblings, children and friends.

I have always enjoyed living where there are four distinct seasons. While we have four seasons, the transitions from one season to the next season are usually not sudden as winter snow sometimes warns us of what is to come in early October and crocuses push their way through the snow to give us hope for spring to come. We have learned our lessons the hard way and wait until Memorial Day to plant tomatoes, peppers and the like.

I am my husband’s caregiver. That role came to me gradually as my husband’s health deteriorated. John was always active and worked hard even in his retirement and volunteer roles. When we moved to Sheridan in 2006 and for many years thereafter, he refereed football, played racquetball at the YMCA, golfed, bicycled and walked. He was active.

What does it mean that the General Assembly approved as new judges two men who, when they were state senators, voted against the landmark 2011 transgender rights bill? In any sane universe, it shouldn’t mean anything. The bill was signed into law, and a judge, as a critical part of our legal system, is required to uphold the law rather than undermine it. But in the here and now, it’s deeply unsettling for the trans community and our friends, loved ones, and allies.

Connecticut’s state colleges and universities are in deep, deep trouble. Higher ed leaders are warning the state that if funding isn’t increased, they will face devastating layoffs, tuition hikes, service cuts, and possibly even campus closures. And that’s true. If this budget passes as-is, the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities System (CSCU) will have about $70 million less in total funds than they did last year.

Plastic chokes the streets and waterways of the Philippines. Germany shut its last nuclear power plant, which will cause that nation to rely more on burning fossil fuels – like coal – for power. A study came out linking air pollution from cars to shorter lifespans. An indigenous tribe in Panama will be forced to leave their island home to escape rising sea levels, the pace of which has more than doubled in the last few years.

Last week Gov. Ned Lamont removed the head of the Board of Pardons and Paroles, Carleton Giles, following weeks of outrage from crime victims, Republicans, and some Democrats over the recent jump in sentence commutations issued by the board. But a few days later, the state Senate approved Giles’s renomination to the board by a vote of 21-14.
