The Virginia Highlands Airport Authority is asking Washington County to pay half the cost of hiring a resident project representative to oversee construction of a nearly $1 million project to erect seven box hangars to house aircraft at the airport in Abingdon. The county’s half of the $28,320 cost would be $14,160. The request will be considered Tuesday night by the Washington County Board of Supervisors. The airport authority would pay the other half.

A 1.5-mile section of U.S. 58 between Damascus and Konnarock that was decimated by flooding and high winds from Hurricane Helene last September will officially reopen Thursday afternoon — five months ahead of schedule. The owner of about 50 acres of vacant land off Reservoir and Second streets in Bristol is asking the city to rezone the property to a more flexible district that would allow a mix of residential and light commercial uses. The rezoning request will be considered Monday by the city’s planning commission. Currently, the property, which is near Eastridge Apartments on Portsmouth Avenue, is zoned for moderate family residential use. It was rezoned from single and two-family residential in 2001.

Dickenson County Behavioral Health Services has grown so much in recent years that some of its employees are now “stuffed” in closets, according to Executive Director Kevin Mullins. The number of employees has more than doubled — going from around 35 to 75 — and the range of programs and services has increased, as has demand for those services, he added.
