Even while serving a life sentence for fatally shooting a police officer, Randall McKenzie is in and out of court dealing with more gun charges and other criminal matters. This week his cases were before the court twice. (Two counts of failing to appear in court were stayed during one of those appearances.)And he’ll be back a couple of more times next week.

Covering killer Jon Rallo for nearly 30 years made me a better journalist. When I arrived at The Spec as its new police reporter, the infamous Rallo case — he killed his wife Sandra, their son Jason, 6, and daughter Stephanie, 5 — was already 20 years old and he was well ensconced in prison. I took over the file and have written about him dozens of times since. This week, I reported his death. I learned of it from Sandra’s sister, Janice Orovan.

My first byline was in a community newspaper while I was in high school. Journalism matters. My heart breaks for my colleagues who are losing their jobs. And it breaks for every community that will be less informed, less transparent and less accountable.
