SKOWHEGAN — Eighteen months after a devastating flood caused severe damage to a renovation project at the historic Spinning Mill, town leaders and Gov. Janet Mills celebrated the project on Tuesday. With some work still to be done, the old mill will offer 40 units of workforce housing, 20 hotel rooms, a rooftop deck and German-inspired beer garden.

AUGUSTA, Maine — A bill to require cities and towns to allow backyard chickens is flying through the State House and should soon land on Gov. Janet Mills desk. Rep. Jennifer Poirier, R-Skowhegan, sponsored the legislation after hearing that some cities and towns were prohibiting the birds despite the 2021 passage of a right to food constitutional amendment. Maine was the first state in the country to enshrine a right to food in its state constitution.

KENNEBUNK — Each December, the Seaside Inn sets its rates for the coming year and sends out letters to previous guests, inviting them to send along a deposit to hold their room. This year, something changed in February. “By the middle of February, I had to send back almost $7,000 in deposits and these are people I know, they are friends,” said Ken Mason, inn owner. “I called each one and wanted to ask why.”He asked them if it was the tariffs. “They said no, it’s just basic honor,” Mason said.

SKOWHEGAN, Maine — A major piece of local public art is for sale for $1. The Skowhegan Regional Chamber of Commerce is soliciting bids for the Skowhegan Indian, a 62-foot-tall sculpture that stands on a 20-foot base and weighs 24,000 pounds. Last summer, the Select Board declined to accept the Bernard Langlais sculpture as a gift, saying the town could not afford an estimated $100,000 in repairs.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi filed a federal lawsuit Wednesday that claims Maine is violating anti-discrimination law by allowing transgender girls to participate in female sports.
