A student-curated exhibit highlighting RIT tiger pride will be on display outside the RIT Archives in time for Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend, Oct. 18-20. Students in the museum studies course, Critical and Digital Curation, used the archives to explore the origin of the RIT tiger mascot in 1955. Their exhibit, “The Stories They Tell: S.P.I.R.I.T,” shines a light on 1963, when RIT students brought a tiger cub to campus, parties, and hockey games.

A history class that dug into the RIT Archives allowed students like criminal justice major Chris Kurdziel to sample the cutting-edge domestic science curriculum taught in 1893 at the Mechanics Institute, a forerunner to RIT. During the class, Hands on History: Examining RIT’s Domestic Science and Arts Program, Kurdziel learned to embroider the letter “C,” sew, and bake cookies and buns from period cookbooks held in the RIT Archives and shared from a classmate’s personal collection.

First came COVID-19, then came a massive construction project, and now after more than three-and-half years, RIT’s university library reopens with a new look and a new neighbor. Wallace Library adjoins the Student Hall for Exploration and Development (SHED)—the new maker space, performing arts, and classroom facility that will open soon. The SHED design redefined the library, condensing its footprint while increasing its visibility to students and opportunities to engage with the campus community.
