Jane Austen was a remarkably perceptive writer for her times. Born in 1775 to a Church of England rector and an aristocratic mother, she only lived to 41, but the British author “changed the face of fiction” with her third-person narrative style. Her first novel, Sense and Sensibility, was published anonymously (“By a Lady”) in 1811. It tells the story of Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, who represent the yin and yang of the title: Elinor has self-command; Marianne is self-indulgent.
