Heart and humor abound in the sensational production of the American musical theater classic “Hello, Dolly!” at Lyric Stage in Boston’s Back Bay through Sunday, June 22. The Lyric Stage production, running two and a half hours with a 15-minute intermission, is directed by Maurice Emmanuel Parent, co-founder and producing artistic director of the Front Porch Arts Collective, a Black-led theater company committed to advancing racial equity.

“Why let me go?” is a question no daughter should have to ask her mother. But young Nigerian Iniabasi Ekpeyong has arrived in the USA, where she was born, to reunite with her mother, Abasiama Ufot. After giving birth to Iniabasi 30 years ago, Abasiama let her then-husband return to Nigeria with their newborn. Mother and daughter meet in the New York City apartment of Adiaha, the oldest of the three children Abasiama has raised with her second husband, Disciple, also a Nigerian immigrant.

When Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II created “Carousel,” which Time magazine declared “the Best Musical of the 20th Century,” they adapted a bleak 1909 drama “Liliom” (tough guy) by Hungarian playwright Ferenc Molnár, who turned down Giacomo Puccini’s offer to transform it into an opera. But after seeing the first musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein, “Oklahoma!” he consented to their proposal of a musical.

The arts resources of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology now includes the school’s first building designed for the study and performance of music. The Edward and Joyce Linde Music Building, behind the Kresge Auditorium and MIT Chapel, opens to the public Saturday with a celebratory concert called “Sonic Jubilance” – the start of a monthslong festival of 80 events across the campus, free and open to the public.

Spanning four centuries of music and multiple genres of dance, Complexions Contemporary Ballet performed two shows last weekend at the Emerson Cutler Majestic Theatre in Boston, presented by Global Arts Live. Entitled “From Bach to Bowie,” the company’s 90-minute program provided an exciting introduction to the dancers and their repertoire.
