    Pennsylvania State University’s board of trustees on a split vote Thursday approved a plan put forth by President Neeli Bendapudi to close seven of its Commonwealth campuses. The campuses, which are spread from Northeastern Pennsylvania to Western Pennsylvania, will shut following the 2026-27 school year. The plan is subject to approval by Pennsylvania’s acting education secretary Carrie Rowe.

    Villanova University has agreed to give Rosemont College up to $40 million as part of its merger agreement, according to Rosemont’s recent financial filings. The two Catholic universities on the Main Line announced in March that they had reached agreement for the financially struggling Rosemont to merge into the much larger Villanova beginning in 2027 and becoming final in 2028.

    Penn State trustees are scheduled to vote Thursday on a plan to close seven of its Commonwealth campuses. They are: Dubois, Fayette, Mont Alto, New Kensington, Shenango, Wilkes-Barre, and York. Five more were also studied for closure but are not part of the current closure proposal: Hazleton, Schuylkill, Beaver, Greater Allegheny, and Scranton.

    Republican State Sen.Pat Stefano said he made one thing very clear to Penn State administrators on a phone call this week: “You turn your back on my community. Now I turn my back on you.” Stefano, whose district includes Penn State’s Fayette campus, one of seven Commonwealth campuses recommended for closure, said he would “have a hard time saying yes” to funding for Penn State if it goes through with the plan. The Fayette campus is the only two and four-year college in the county, he said.
