Mars Petcare recently opened a new pet food plant in Lewisburg, Ohio. The new plant was opened on the same grounds where Mars has a “pet health and nutrition center” since 2014, otherwise known as a research facility evaluating their pet foods on cats and dogs. The state of Ohio welcomed the new Mars Petcare pet food plant with open arms, providing Mars with “$3.5 million in grants, and the Ohio Tax Credit Authority approved a 10-year Job Creation Tax Credit” worth another $1.5 million dollars.

In September 2024, Answers Pet Food issued a withdrawal for multiple products “for the presence of Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes.” Recently acquired Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) documents show these two pathogens might not have been the only issues with this pet food. The FOIA documents we received are classified as FDA “Consumer Complaint/Injury Report,” all were dated in August 2024 however the pet illnesses appeared to occur in May 2024.

In February 2025, Consumer Reports published their testing results of various pet food products. One of the pet foods that was tested – “Pedigree’s Complete Nutrition Adult Roasted Chicken, Rice, and Vegetable” – was found to contain more than 4 times the allowed level of vitamin D.
