Her father, an architect, and mother, an English teacher, were part of the School of Economic Science (SES), a controversial global organisation founded in the 1930s and influenced by orthodox Hinduism. According to the rules of SES, Watson says, “popular culture was pretty much frowned upon”. “People have called it a cult,” says Watson, who went to St James, a school in west London run by the organisation.
