Even a year after the completion of construction work on the Jibanananda Das Archive and Library on the bank of the Dhanshiri river in Jhalakathi, the facility remains locked, awaiting administrative handover. Constructed by the Bangladesh Water Development Board, the foundation stone for the picturesque facility was laid on February 18, 2023, the birth anniversary of the celebrated poet. The construction was completed in June 2024 at a cost of Tk 3.14 crore.

The Char Fasson canal, stretching 20 kilometres through Bhola's Char Fasson upazila, was once a bustling waterway that facilitated navigation for large boats, trawlers, and launches, promoting communication and trade. Over the years, however, rampant encroachment has choked the canal, reducing it to a narrow drain and transforming its vibrant waters into a lifeless channel. Flowing through the southernmost part of the upazila, the canal connects to the Betua, Tentulia, and Meghna rivers.

Once a lifeline, the waterbody now in its deathbed The 11-kilometre-long Bhola canal, once a vital waterway for trade and irrigation, has become a source of distress for Bhola city and district due to rampant encroachment and pollution. Bhola municipality authorities said the canal, which previously facilitated goods transport by boat, has lost its flow over the past six years. Waste accumulation and narrowing from encroachment have rendered it unusable, affecting thousands of residents.

The Barishal City Corporation, established in 2002, has yet to develop a modern waste management system for the tonnes of garbage generated in the city even after two decades of establishment. Although BCC had proposed a project for setting up a modern waste management plant with incineration facilities, it later got cancelled in the face of opposition from local residents.

Originally just a small one-storey tin house, it has now become a two-storey building, all of it located on three decimals of land.
