Don’t let those innocent eyes fool you. You’d never imagine such a small creature could produce so much poo, until you’ve kept guinea pigs, and then the full horror of these little poop production machines hits you! We’ve kept guinea pigs for 20 years. They are gorgeous, but they produce so much poo! We’ve dealt with impacted rectums, holidays where they have to manage for themselves for a few days, and there’s no getting away from the clean-up necessary when we get home.

A few years ago, I was writing about Titicaca Water Frogs for an exotic pets magazine, and Iāve never felt so emotional about frogs in my life. These poor creatures are on the verge of extinction, and theyāre huge! Half a metre in length!I interviewed Arturo, who was working diligently towards their conservation in Bolivia. He was emotional about it, too. His dedication to his cause was causing rifts with his family because it was swallowing up all his time.

We went caravanning on the Isle of Skye and had lots of weather, cold showers and insect infestations. On the morning of our third day, there was still no hot water in the showers so I attempted to clean myself in the washing-up bowl in the caravan. Epic failure. I couldnāt get the soap off my legs in the soft water. So I headed out for another cold shower. Everyone else had abandoned them, so there were 1000 midges waiting in the cubicle for their next victim.

Day one of our holiday on the Isle of Skye was a disaster with gales, floods, and high winds. We were sleeping in a caravan. The gale subsided by about 4am, and we finally drifted off to sleep. We woke at 8. Bleary eyed and weary, I went to take a shower. I put my 20p in the slot and received a cold shower. I was not impressed. The lady in the next cubicle said hers was cold too, so I didn’t think it was anything I’d done. It turned out that there was a fault with the showers, so there was no hot water.

Our visit to the Scottish island of Skye was among our most dramatic caravanning holidays to date. The campsite was down a seven-mile winding road and after 15 minutes travelling along this little road, we wondered if we’d missed it. We finally felt a sense of relief when we spotted a few tents. We set up in the pouring rain, then checked out the facilities: basic but functional.
