The Pirates of Penzance (Pirates) is the fifth work in the series of Gilbert and Sullivan’s (G&S) celebrated 14 Savoy operettas. Famously known for the creation of a new genre of musical theatre, Pirates blended grand opera with sharp, comedic lyrics. For financial reasons, it was the only one of the operettas that premiered outside of the UK in New York in 1879.

An initiative of Queensland Theatre (QT), the DOOR 3 project was instigated to support independent Queensland artists and theatre-makers giving them a space in the indie venue of Diane Cilento Studio to try out grass roots theatre. It offers a marvellous opportunity for small, independent collectives to reimagine old works or offer new, raw and challenging ones. Nest Ensemble is one of the 2024 collectives and is utilising the venue to stage its most recent original work, Wanderings.
A fond farewell to a Goldner era

The affectionately named Goldners, Dene Olding (violin), Irina Morozova (viola), Dimity Hall (violin) and Julian Smiles (cello), commenced their musical lives in the early 1990s as members of the Australian Ensemble, the resident chamber group at the University of New South Wales. They played many concerts together before launching themselves as the Goldner String Quartet in 1995.

Alfred Henrie Elliott (1870-1954) was a keen amateur photographer whose significant body of work, donated to the city of Brisbane, has been housed at the Museum of Brisbane (MoB) since 1983. Preserved in cedar cigar boxes, the Elliott Collection appeared to have lain dormant for decades until it was discovered under a house in inner city Red Hill.

The Australian Festival of Chamber Music (AFCM) started the Festival with glowing tributes to retiring quartet-in-residence, the Goldner String Quartet, which has been a major part of AFCM since the early 90s. After 30 years together as one of Australia finest chamber ensembles, the Quartet members have decided to call it a day. The Festival Farewell was their swansong to the AFCM as a quartet, although we may well see them back as individual musicians in the future.

Given the state of our current political world, one might be forgiven for thinking that the title of this work, Cost of Living, relates to the daily struggle of many to make ends meet financially. However, this Australian premiere of Polish-American playwright Martyna Majok’s drama (which had its world premiere in Boston in 2016 and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2018) has a different premise. ‘Cost’ here means the price we have to pay for just being able to live each day.
