All six of the first-round rookie quarterback own different time tables to a starting job. For Drake Maye, his time as QB1 with the Patriots could be coming sooner than originally thought. Maye, the former North Carolina star, enjoyed a nice outing against the Eagles Thursday night at Gillette Stadium. Then on Friday morning, Patriots coach Jerod Mayo told reporters there’s a possibility Maye could start seeing first-team reps in practice next week. “We’ll see,” Mayo said in a media availability.

Although Trevor Lawrence saw some action in the Jaguars preseason opener against the Chiefs, he’ll be sitting out this weekend in favor of backups C.J. Beathard and Mac Jones. Jaguars coach Doug Pederson made the announcement, Thursday, ahead of Jacksonville’s game against the Buccaneers. It’s not that Lawrence is injured. But the two teams have conducted two days of joint practices. It’s basically a controlled scrimmage.

Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy confirmed that DeMarvion Overshown suffered a hip injury. But the situation “doesn’t look too serious.”Overshown hurt his hip in training camp on Wednesday. His coaches and teammates were right to be worried for him. After all, this time last year, the former Texas Longhorn star tore his ACL and needed season-ending knee surgery. So there was real concern for the second-year player, given how hard he’d worked to get back to the field.

The Panthers got a scare Thursday when Chuba Hubbard injured his knee during a joint practice with the Jets. But coach Dave Canales shared better news about the running back after the workout. Canales told reporters: “Chuba went down — we had big concerns there. The initial testing looks pretty good, so they’re going to follow up.
