It is a great privilege to stand before you today, with the honour of delivering the Sir George Adlington Syme Oration. I acknowledge Sir Syme as one of the three founders of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) and its first president. In my research on Sir Syme, I discovered that he was renowned for both his surgical and administrative skills. Today, in delivering this oration, I follow the legacy started by Charles H. Fagge in 1932.

AbstractEating disorders are as common in Māori, the Indigenous people of Aotearoa-New Zealand, as they are in non-Māori; however, research has focused on the experiences of non-Māori. This paper will describe explanatory factors, treatment experiences and what helps with recovery for Māori. Kaupapa Māori research methodology informed the methods and analysis.
