Suzy LeonardFor FLORIDA TODAYI love spring, with its mild, sunny days and flower-filled gardens. I could do without the oak pollen, but I suppose spring’s perfection must be mitigated, lest it seem boastful and self-satisfied. Easter offers the ideal illustration of spring, with Christ’s brutal sacrifice made in love bringing a season of renewal of hope. I love gathering with friends, celebrating the sun rising on a new day and new possibilities.

Suzy LeonardFor FLORIDA TODAYTwo school teachers, a Baptist preacher and a journalist walk into an ice cream shop. No, this isn’t the start of a punny joke. It’s the middle of my spring break roadtrip. Suzy LeonardFor FLORIDA TODAY“This is why we live here.”That’s what a friend told me a few weeks after I moved to the Space Coast in 1999. It was a gorgeous almost-spring day, and we were sitting outside enjoying a cocktail, sunshine and a cool ocean breeze. He was right. It’s the best time of year for park picnics and river walks and taking kids to the playground and al fresco brunches.

As we gently swayed back and forth, he stared up at me with wise, blue eyes, his eyelids getting heavy. He fought sleep as long as he could, raising his brows like he’d been surprised, a last-ditch effort to keep those eyes open.

Suzy LeonardFor FLORIDA TODAYAhhhh, brunch. The word conjures images of leisurely meals that include decadent sweets, plenty of bacon and mimosas, of course. Ladies love brunch. Gentlemen who love ladies acquiesce and join in. Brunch offers the perfect opportunity to celebrate food, friendship and the weekend, along with the perfect excuse for an afternoon nap. But did you know brunch can also can have a higher calling? That’s the case when we’re talking about the Feb.

Cooler air, a few twigs on the sidewalk, the morning after #HurricaneIsaias2020 in Rockledge, Florida.

The calm before the storm? It’s a gray day over the Indian River in Cocoa Village. Wind is picking up as Isaias nears. #HurricaneIsaias https://t.co/GCNq71dth5
