The Super Cup, rebranded as Kalinga Super Cup for Orissa being host for three out of four editions, has served as the annual cup competition for Indian club football since its inception in 2018. The competition is played in a straight knockout format, including a group stage in some editions, with all Indian Super League (ISL) and top clubs from the I-League participating in it. The Super Cup winners get a spot in the AFC Champions League 2 qualifiers, giving more incentive for winning the trophy.

The ISL 2024-25 season was a goal-fest, to say the least, as a fascinating 468 strikes found the net over 24 matchdays plus the playoffs. The campaign was the largest in the division’s history, with 13 clubs participating in the contest. The fascinating scoring numbers were due to the prolific forwards witnessed this season as most clubs hit the mark with their striker signings while the proven stars also took their contributions to better levels.

The Super Cup 2025 will be the fifth edition of the competition and the second after rebranded as ‘Kalinga Super Cup’ to be hosted in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha again. As usual, 16 teams will participate in the contest, 13 from ISL and three from the I-League. However, there will be a format change this season or fair to say a revert to the old system. The tournament’s curtain-raiser is on 20 April 2025 with the final scheduled on 3 May 2025.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant went the extra mile in the 2024-25 season as they won the ISL Shield for consecutive years (See here: Mohun Bagan Records in ISL 2023-24 Shield), in a dominating fashion this time. Unlike last season where the decider happened on the final day of the league stage, the team clinched success with two games remaining and finishing 10 points clear at the top.

The 2024-25 ISL winter transfer window has been relatively quiet, as many clubs spent heavily during the summer window. Despite some of those teams struggling this season and the league being dominated by Shield Mohun Bagan Super Giant, most summer arrivals have done their business at their respective clubs. The league leaders, upper-ranked FC Goa, Bengaluru FC, Jamshedpur FC and NorthEast United have not done business for obvious reasons as have Chennaiyin FC and Mohammedan SC.
