Kennebunk High School students are getting hands-on experience with advanced biotech equipment in their biology classes. The science department recently acquired polymerase chain reaction and gel electrophoresis equipment, the same technology that became a cornerstone of the COVID-19 response. Funded by a $5,000 grant from the Education Foundation of the Kennebunks and Arundel, the technology has transformed how students learn molecular biology concepts.

Three Biddeford student teams were named Odyssey of the Mind State Champions earlier this month, sending them to the World Finals in Michigan in May. Led by Odyssey of the Mind District Coordinator Victoria Salo, each of the teams were given a long-term problem and were tasked with presenting their solution at the state competition. “It’s all about teamwork and creativity,” Salo said.

The proposed $62.5 million budget for Kennebunk-area schools is up about 8%. The proposal, $3.3 million more than the current budget, would increase school tax bills in Kennebunk by about 7.6% on top of any property tax resulting from the town budget. The portion of the Kennebunk property tax rate to support education would increase by 27 cents, resulting in $11.37 in taxes per $1,000 of a property’s valuation.
