Some are named, some are hidden. Some are unexpectedly front and centre, others are obscure. These are the women who are connected to the birth of Jesus, many of whom are marginalized both in their culture and in our readings. All of them are seeking to birth hope in a world where the powerful seem to control the lives of women. The beginning of the Gospel of Matthew doesn’t make it into many Christmas plays, with its long list of Jesus’ ancestors.

Dear God,Years ago, Paul Simon sang, “These are the days of miracle and wonder.” But that song was filled with terrifying images: soldiers in the desert, a bomb in a baby carriage. That sounds more like mayhem and worry than miracle and wonder. Still, that wise secular theologian and prophet kept repeating “And don’t cry, baby, don’t cry.” Was he crazy? Was he right?

Creator of all,we are waiting for the sky to fall. We look on in horror at children killed,homes and schools bombed,smoking rubble filling the streets. We mourn with all who have lost loved ones,all who have fled the fighting,all who will lie down in fear this night. Above the sounds of the rockets,the weeping of the bereaved,you call us to be lovers,lovers in a dangerous time.
