The negatively charged boron vacancy (VB−) center in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is currently garnering considerable attention for the design of two-dimensional (2D) quantum sensing units. Such developments require a precise understanding of the spin-dependent optical response of VB− centers, which still remains poorly documented despite its key role for sensing applications.

We report on electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy of boron-vacancy (VB−) centers hosted in isotopically engineered hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) crystals. We first show that isotopic purification of hBN with N15 yields a simplified and well-resolved hyperfine structure of VB− centers, while purification with B10 leads to narrower ESR linewidths.
