As I looked around my afternoon psychology lecture, an overwhelming number of students had their laptops open to crossword puzzles. From The New York Times' daily mini-puzzle to The Wall Street Journal’s Monday puzzle to The Daily Pennsylvanian's acrostic, there seemed to be countless students trying to solve a crossword in between lecture slides. It was surprising to see a shift from the typical lecture hobbies of Instagram, online shopping carts, and texts with friends.

“Soft” drinks were historically synonymous with any non-alcoholic, carbonated, flavored beverage. That’s why I gawked at my first “Soft IPA.” The label assured me it was 5.3% ABV. Each sip was pillowy soft. Softly sessionable. Hop forward but with only a soft bitterness to balance the notes of melon and tropical fruit. Soft? Check. Non-alcoholic? No sirree. With craft brewers churning out so many beer sub-styles, the Soft IPA strikes me as a flash in the pan.
