1 INTRODUCTION Water transport from roots to shoots is essential for the function and survival of land plants. In terrestrial environments, as plants regularly face soil water restriction, their water transport system must be robust enough so that the negative pressures formed within the xylem do not result in embolism formation (Tyree and Sperry 1989; Johnson et al. 2022).

1 INTRODUCTION Understanding plant mortality in response to drought has been a recurrent topic in plant science, especially considering the growing number of die-off events being reported throughout the world (Hammond et al., 2022). Most studies, however, have focused on woody plant mortality, either because of their perennial life cycle or because of the critical ecosystem services they provide to humanity (Martinez-Vilalta et al., 2019; Trugman, 2022).
